Of all ski fields in New Zealand, Cardrona Alpine Resort is the best for beginners.
Firstly, most of the terrain is easy to intermediate, with a “chondola” (gondola combined with a chair lift) for those nervous about riding a chair lift. And secondly, Cardrona offers the most flexible range of lessons for skiers of all levels.
Cardrona Alpine Resort typically opens in June and closes in October.
The opening dates for New Zealand’s ski fields vary from year to year, so you will need to check for the current season dates. However, Cardrona has some of New Zealand’s most consistent snow as a result of its high elevation and extensive snowmaking capabilities.
It rarely snows in the actual town of Wanaka, so you will need to drive up to Cardrona Alpine Resort or another ski field to see snow. However, this means you won’t have to deal with as much snow and ice on the roads.
