Traveling to Queenstown

Queenstown is located on the South Island, with an International Airport offering day and night flights to all corners of the world, with direct flights to and from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The airport is just a 10-minute drive from the town centre.

There are two other big international airports within fairly easy reach:

• Dunedin – around 280 km away
• Christchurch – around 484 km away

Whichever of these airports you travel to, there are lots of transport options to choose from. Flying into Christchurch or Dunedin, a choice of car rentals, private shuttles or regular bus services will get you to your final winter destination. It’s not the express option, but after long flights the route rewards you with some of the most stunning landscapes in New Zealand.

Which months offer the best snow conditions near Queenstown?

July and August offer the most dependable snow cover at Queenstown ski fields. If you’re not travelling with kids, we recommend visiting in late July or in August to avoid the school holiday crowds.

Which ski field near Queenstown is best for beginners?

Cardrona Alpine Resort is the best Queenstown ski field for beginners, with extensive green runs. However, it’s a bit further from Queenstown than Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, which both offer great beginner areas and introductory lesson packages.

Which Queenstown ski field is best suited to advanced or expert skiers and snowboarders?

Treble Cone, which is 1 hour 45 minutes from Queenstown, is a true alpine playground designed for advanced and expert skiers and boarders. With both groomed and off-piste terrain to explore, this is a favourite among experienced locals.

Closer to Queenstown, both Coronet Peak and The Remarkable have excellent terrain for advanced skiers and boarders. Coronet Peak is our top choice for a powder day, with more accessible off-piste terrain, while The Remarkables has extreme terrain for those who are prepared to scope out routes beforehand.

How does night skiing work at Coronet Peak?

On Wednesday and Friday nights in July and August, head up to Coronet Peak between 4 – 9 pm for an experience like no other. The lights come on and the slopes transform, with music, outdoor fires, and mulled wine to add to the fun.

Book a special night ski pass at a discounted rate to access the slopes after dark, with on-slope dining open late so you can enjoy apres-ski beneath the stars.

Night skiing is open on additional days during the school holidays.

Can I ski multiple Queenstown ski fields in one trip, and is there a combined lift pass available?

There are two combined lift passes available for Queenstown skiing:

• Coronet Peak and The Remarkables
• Cardrona and Treble Cone

Coronet Peak and The Remarkables are both located close to downtown Queenstown, so most skiers visit both during their stay.

Many skiers choose to stay in Queenstown while skiing at Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, and in Wanaka while skiing Cardrona and Treble Cone. However, you can reach all four ski fields from Queenstown.

There are buses from Queenstown to all four nearby ski fields: Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona, and Treble Cone. All ski buses need to be pre-booked for a specific date, time, and pick-up location.

How long is the drive from Queenstown town centre to each of the nearby ski fields?

The driving times are:

• Queenstown to Coronet Peak: 25 minutes
• Queenstown to The Remarkables: 45 minutes
• Queenstown to Cardrona Alpine Resort: 1 hour 15 minutes
• Queenstown to Treble Cone: 1 hour 50 minutes

What age do children have to be for ski lessons and childcare at the Queenstown ski fields?

Children can join group lessons starting at:

• The Remarkables: 4 years old
• Coronet Peak: 3 years old – childcare available for ages 2-5
• Cardrona: 3 years old – childcare available for ages 3 months – 4 years
• Treble Cone: 5 years old

Private lessons are available for younger children. At Cardrona, these can be added on to childcare for children ages 2+.

Is it better to stay in Queenstown or closer to the ski fields during a ski trip?

We recommend staying in downtown Queenstown for your ski holiday. There is no on-mountain accommodation at Coronet Peak or The Remarkables, and central Queenstown is convenient to both of the closest two ski fields, which are in different directions.
