As you plan your New Zealand ski holiday, you will need to arrange three components:
We recommend booking flights directly from Australia to the airport nearest your chosen ski field. For Mt Hutt, this will be Christchurch Airport. And for the Queenstown and Wanaka ski fields, this will be Queenstown Airport.
The reason we do not include flights with our ski packages is because most of our clients are able to secure better deals through booking directly with the airline. We recommend looking at flights with Air New Zealand and Jetstar.
All of our ski packages include lift passes, accommodation, and transportation (rental car or mountain coach). Some also include lesson and rental packages or off-slope activities.
These packages serve as a starting point when you begin planning your ski holiday. However, we recommend adding in anything else you need to make your ski holiday a success. We can bundle everything together for great discounts and unbeatable convenience.
This includes:
You need a passport to travel to New Zealand from Australia, but not a visa.
If you are traveling with an Australian passport, your passport needs to be valid until the date you leave New Zealand (other nationalities must hold a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the date you intend to leave New Zealand).
Skiing can be expensive. Thankfully, there are many ways to save big on your New Zealand ski holiday. These are a few of our top tips to save on New Zealand ski travel:
Especially if you’re traveling as a family, the best and cheapest accommodation is fully booked out by January. If you book your ski holiday early, you can score great discounts or accommodation upgrades on your ski package.
When the ski season begins in early or mid-June (not the case in 2020), traveling in June is far cheaper than any other time during the winter season. June is still quiet, with fewer crowds, and we can often find excellent savings if you travel in this shoulder season.
The biggest variable in a New Zealand ski trip from Australia is the flights. While you can score round-trip flights for $300 or less at certain times of year, these skyrocket to well over $600 over peak periods. If you’re traveling as a family, that can mean spending an extra $1200 or more on your ski holiday.
The best way to save on flights is to book early, choose your dates based on the cheapest flights you can find, and plan everything else around that.
While traveling with excess luggage can be pricey, renting ski gear for three or more days is pricier still. If you’re planning to spend a week or longer in New Zealand, it pays to bring your own gear from home. Plus, that way you’ll know everything fits right.
